Recently, director Raj Kumar Gupta talked about the fictional re-presentation of IT Commissioner Sharda Prashad Pandey in his latest directorial 'Raid'.
Starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'cruz in lead roles, 'Raid' revolves around the story of Pandey, an IT Commissioner of Lucknow who had raided the house of businessman Sardar Inder Singh in 1981 and recovered assets worth Rs 1.6 crore in cash and gold.
Commenting on the valour of this enigmatic man, Gupta said, 'Everyone wants their story to be real. He was clear that we should not fictionalize it so much that the reality gets buried beneath'.
He further exclaimed, 'Anybody who is parting with an episode of his life would want to see it being told in a responsible way. My body of work helped me win his trust'.
While working on the fictional re-presentation, the makers of the film are said to have adopted responsible film-making and were extremely careful about never mentioning the names, following an unsaid conduct about not mentioning particulars in cases of IT raids.
Admittedly being intrigued by the entire occurrence of 1981, when Gupta learned that the IT raid went on for 18 hours with 45 people present only for the counting of notes, the director decided to portray it on the screen.
He observed that 'the press wasn't as widespread back then, so the information in the public was limited'.
After a thorough research on the code of confidentiality that the officers maintained back then, he further noted, 'Officers never told their family members where they were going. A lot of heroic stories have got lost from those times. I hope to highlight them'.

Raid new song Nit khair: Once again, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan comes to rescue
Raid is the lovestory of an income tax officer entwined with his fight against corruption. Set in the ‘80s Lucknow, the latest song highlights the romantic side of the tough law enforcer.
It seems Bollywood has decided to push bonafide musicians out of the game. Like every second film, Ajay Devgn’s Raid is also relying on re-mastered versions of old classics. Earlier, the makers released Sanu ek pal and now they have come up with Nit khair mangda, both originally sung by the legendary musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Once again, the maestro’s nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has voiced the song.
Raid, also starring Ileana D’Cruz, is the lovestory of an income tax officer entwined with his fight against corruption. Set in the ‘80s Lucknow, the latest song highlights the romantic side of the tough law enforcer.
The track has been rewritten, in parts, by lyricist Manoj Muntashir. Tanishk Bagchi, who has shown the required skills in remastered songs like Tamma Tamma Loge, Hawa Hawai, Raat Baaki and Aashiq Banaya Aapne, has recreated the new song.
Bagchi said in a press statement, “When you hear it, you’ll understand that not just the hook line, the entire song is new. But I also wanted to retain the original’s essence. The good part about Rahat sir’s singing is that he understands the feel of a song which always helps. Nit Khair is a powerful romantic number.”
Director Rajkumar Gupta, who had a promising debut in Bollywood with Aamir (2008) and has made films such as No One Killed Jessica and Ghanchakkar, also offered his take on the song. He said, “The song offers a glimpse into the onscreen couple’s life and the love, care and warmth they share in the film. It’s shot across Lucknow including landmark locations such as Hussainabad Clock Tower, Rumi Darwaza, Bada Imambada, Kudiya Ghat and Residency.”
The first look poster of Ajay Devgn's upcoming film Raid was released recently. The poster managed to pique the curiosity of the viewers precisely because the actor was sitting between wads of cash and stacks of gold bars. It is a fact well known by now that Devgn is playing a stern income tax officer in his next. However, the film is inspired by the the real life I-T raids that were conducted by Indian Revenue Services back in the '80s, reports DNA.
A former officer told the publication in an interview what went on behind those raids and how the team successfully carried them out in unfavourable situations. 'We would pick teams of honest officers, who would do thorough research and not depend on information based on hearsay. After a careful analysis, we would decide on whether to conduct the raid or not and accordingly get our senior’s approval for it,' he tells DNA.
These raids were conducted secretly, cutting any source of communication from the place of interest. Often, these operations were conducted amid high political pressure from the parties. The control room had to be updated about every single discovery that was made and scanning every object in the place was crucial because people would hide their assets in the strangest places. Everything from the children's math textbooks to mattresses and fall ceilings had to be inspected for any hidden codes. Therefore, Devgn will be playing one such officer in the UP-set film.
The film also stars Ileana D'Cruz and Saurabh Shukla. Raid will be the second collaboration of D'Cruz with Devgn after 2017's Baadshaho.
Director Raj Kumar Gupta's filmography includes the likes of Ghanchakkar (2013), No One Killed Jessica(2011) and Aamir (2008). Raid is slated to release on 16 March, 2018.

The trailer of the film ‘Raid‘ starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’Cruz is already out and if you’ve seen it, it will give you a clear idea of what the film is all about. ‘Raid’ is the story of the longest-running Income Tax raid in the history of India. Inspired by a true case, ‘Raid’ is set in the year 1981, Lucknow.
According to a report in India Today, on July 16, 1981 morning, the IT officials raided the house of businessman, and Congress MLA Sardar Inder Singh in Kanpur. 90 experienced officers under the leadership of the then Income Tax commissioner of Lucknow, Sharda Prasad Pandey, carried out the longest raid. 200 police personals were also present for the safety of the IT officials.
Interestingly, the raid went on for more than 18 hours. There were 45 people, just for the counting of the notes. And, a total of Rs 1.6 crore were recovered in cash besides other assets such as gold. But this raid had happened peacefully.
Well now, you must be thinking then why the film shows violence. Well, it might be taken from another incident, from the same decade.
There was another income tax raid on September 14, 1989, on the factories and homes of two industrialists- paper mill owner Harish Chhabra and jewellery dealer Chitranjan Swarup. Around 88 officers were tasked with finding the black money/assets and approximated around 2 crores. The raid started normally. However, word got out that Chhabra’s assets were being raided, and he managed to get a mob to attack the IT officials, despite the presence of police there.
A lot of IT officials were brutally beaten up. Number of them were hospitalised and some were paralysed forever. To add to the humiliation, the officers who raided Chhabra’s factory were stripped naked and beaten up.

Bollywood has given us various films showcasing some interesting stories of policemen and defence personnel, but Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film Raid is one of its kind with the story revolving around officers from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
Starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’Cruz, the upcoming thriller is set in Uttar Pradesh and is inspired by the real life raid incidents which caught the attention of everyone back in the 80’s. The film is set to release on March 16 and a leading publication got a chance to interact with a former senior officer from the IT department, whose raids have inspired the film.
Talking about the planning which goes behind the raids, the ex-officer revealed, “We would pick teams of honest officers, who would do thorough research and not depend on information based on hearsay. After a careful analysis, we would decide on whether to conduct the raid or not and accordingly get our senior’s approval for it.”
There would be instances wherein they would have to deal with utmost political pressure, “Since the idea was to catch them by surprise, we would strike by 7 or 8 in the morning. Initially, they would get agitated and aggressive, but we’d talk to them and tell them that we’re doing our duty and that the department had nothing personal against them. By afternoon, both sides would warm up to each other a bit, which would ease the proceedings.
Any sort of communication would be cut off from the premises while the raid would be conducted. Commenting on the same, he stated “We had to keep one phone line working to update the control room about what we had found in our searches or if there was any risk to us. For example, during the raids at some houses, people would say that they needed to send their children to school. So, we would have to update the control room about it. Our officers would check the children’s books, especially Maths books, to check for any coded information.”
He shed some light on how people would find ways to hide their assets, “They would keep things inside mattresses, walls, false ceilings, in the homes of their relatives or even with their drivers. During my service, it was rare that we conducted a raid and didn’t find anything.”
Considering that the concept of PAN and Aadhaar cards did not exist back then, he was asked about the difficulties in gathering personal information in the absence of ID proofs, “Every little piece of information mattered. Every detail — whether the person had applied for an arms licence or had got a pet dog, car or property — came handy. Disgruntled employees or former colleagues had to be tapped and cultivated as sources. In case of gold, they would say that it’s ‘streedhan’ and we couldn’t do anything about it. To some extent, even cash could be explained, but wrong entries in ledgers cannot be erased. So mostly, we would look for such diaries and entries. Cash, gold, property papers and wrong entries would range from 10 crore to
100 crore. That would be the criteria for us to consider the raid successful,”
When questioned if he was ever offered a bribe, the ex-officer responded by saying, “The way we conducted ourselves, they wouldn’t dare to offer us bribes. Our department pays us well so that we’re not lured by such monetary offers. It’s a coveted, prestigious and powerful job and we can’t compromise on that.”
The officer mentioned that he is glad that a movie is being made on IT raids, hoping that it would inspire the youth as well.
He concluded by saying “In a way, we are the economic police and our job also serves a social purpose. We’re a part of nation building because we collect revenue for the country. If a youngster wants to do something for the country, he can join the IT department. There are three pillars in this field — investigation, knowledge of accounts and social purpose. For me, investigate is ‘invest’ and ‘get’. You ‘invest’ energy, skill and purpose, and then ‘get’ the result”.
Gulshan Kumar & Tseries present, A Panorama Studios Production, Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, Raid is directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. The film releases on 16th March 2018.
Raj Kumar Gupta is back with “Raid,” based on true events like his last film “No One Killed Jessica” (2011) and is a story of one of the biggest income-tax raids in the country. Devgn plays Amay Patnaik, a fearless officer who carried out a non-stop raid at the mansion of tauji, the most powerful man in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in 1981. The movie is set to release on March 16, 2018.
The trailer was unveiled on Feb. 6. Present on the occasion was the lead star cast of the film – Ajay Devgn (who plays a deputy commissioner of income-tax), Ileana D’Cruz (looking fetching in a black saree and a bun) and Saurabh Shukla, along with producers Bhushan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, writer Ritesh Shah and director Gupta.
While D’Cruz plays Devgn’s wife (they are cast together again after the 2017 “Baadshaho”), Shukla plays Tauji. Amit Trivedi scores music, while Tanishk Bagchi does an additional track. With T-Series being one of the film’s producers, what price the song will be YET another re-creation?
Ajay Devgn’s upcoming movie, Raid is inspired by a real life incident but not much is known about the raid on which it is based so here are some details about it.
The Raj Kumar Gupta-directed film is a fictional representation of an actual raid conducted by IT Commissioner Sharda Prashad Pandey. Pandey had raided the house of businessman, Sardar Inder Singh in 1981 and recovered assets worth Rs 1.6 crore in cash and gold.
A source revealed, “It is an unsaid code amongst IT officers that they never spill the details of the searches they’ve conducted.”
Commenting on the valour of this ‘enigmatic man’, director Raj Kumar Gupta said, “Everyone wants their story to be real. He was clear that we should not fictionalize it so much that the reality gets buried beneath.”
He further added, “Anybody who is parting with an episode of his life would want to see it being told in a responsible way. My body of work helped me win his trust”. While working on the fictional re-presentation, the makers of the film have adopted responsible film-making and were extremely careful about never mentioning the names.”
Gupta was intrigued by the entire occurrence of 1981, when he learnt that the IT Raid went on for 18 hours with 45 people present only to count the currency notes. He said, “The Press wasn’t as widespread back then, so the information in the public was limited. Officers never told their family members where they were going. A lot of heroic stories have got lost from those times. I hope to highlight them.”
Raid stars Ileana D’Cruz and Saurabh Shukla alongside Ajay and is slated to release on March 16.
