Wondering why YOU use sketchup and not a similar program

Hi /r/sketchup my first time posting in thie subreddit!

I've been using sketchup 2017 for the better part of a month now, which incidentally is how long the free trial lasts of the program. I like the program, and I've probably spent between 20-60 hours in it, working on drawings of furniture, of my house (potential renovation ideas) and anything else that I take a fancy to. I find the program is pretty good, overall, but there are some things I really dislike within it. I was wondering why sketchup is your program of choice when drawing/designing things, or if there's other software that you've used that impresses you more.

It's also possible that I am just a novice at working with the program itself, and therefore missing information that could fix some of the problems that I've noticed. If you know a solution to any of the things below, please comment and let me know :)

  • Having to click the simple mouse icon off the toolbar when swapping between different objects or different sides of an object, or different tools. Example: Using push/pull on object A. To use the push/pull tool on object B, you have to go back to the toolbar, click on the simple mouse button, click on object B, deselecting object A, and the click the push/pull icon so you can now use it on object B. I've looked and found no shortcuts for swapping between tools on the toolbar, and simply going from object A to object B (not using a group or component) with push/pull will still only affect object A. Is there shortcuts for the tools? Is there an easier way of doing this? (solved, thank you)

  • Building in layers, instead of groups and components. Another problems I've had, mostly with the furniture builds that I have made, is that I build the structural details first, and do the aesthetic details on top of it. In order to measure/view/build the structure of the object, I have to manually move or delete the upper layers, so I can see what part of the object that I am building. Is there a function where you can draw in layers? So when you select the base layer all you can see is the structure, with the layers on top of it either see through or removed. (Solved, thank you)

  • Another pet peeve, though I am not even sure if another program can provide this, is that sketchup doesn't see individual pieces as pieces. What I want is for the program to lay out all the individual pieces without them being attached to one another, so that once I have a working rendering of the object, I can dissemble it and view each piece of wood I would need to create individually in order to create the project. This process has a name for when it's done on paper, but I don't remember what it's called. I remember having to draw a 3D version of what I'd like to create and then having to draw a 2D 'rough sketch' of each board, with each board separate/detached and drawn with all the proper cuts (ex mortise/tenon). This was in the introductory and intermediate wood building programs that I have taken, and while I recognize it as a technique that helps new students not make as many screw ups, it's also something that could be simple to code into a program such as this, and I will certainly use this resource for larger or more complex builds. (Edit: Am now looking through the extension/plugin warehouse and this will be solved when I find the plugin that works - haven't found this specific one yet)

I have some minor other things that I dislike about the program, but it does have some good points. Even working with a cheap graphics card it doesn't tax my computer when I load large renderings. It seems that the 30$ to buy a licence for Sketch Up 2017 is a one time payment, not a monthly payment as Adobe has switched to. It also doesn't take a lot of time to get used to the program and to create what you want to create - I think I spent about 15 hours on tutorials, and I was good to go after that. The measuring tape tool is excellent and well designed, and the push/pull tool is a huge asset that draws me to this program. But at the same time, I want to hear what other people think about it, from a hobby perspective to a professional perspective.
